Starting Thursday, Cumberland County residents can complete the process of applying for a gun permit entirely online. The change comes as an upgrade to a system where residents could print forms from the county website but still had to apply on paper.

The new online permitting system will allow applicants to file their paperwork and pay their fee, along with a $3 convenience charge.

“The applicant can complete the application process at a time convenient to them, anywhere that they have access to the Internet,” said Sheriff Moose Butler. “The website is very user friendly and secure, with the capability to pay online with a major credit or debit card.”

Applicants will be kept up to date about the process of their application via email, text message or phone.

Butler said those who choose to apply for a gun permit the old-fashioned way can still come to the sheriff's office where staffers will assist them.
